What is the process for appealing, or challenging, a NICS firearms purchase denial?

Every firearm purchased through a Federal Firearm Licensed dealer (FFL) requires a background or NICS check.  Sometimes an individual is denied a purchase in error.  The good news is that there is an appeal process!
